In recent days, experts from Cado Security Labs have revealed new malware that could pose a serious threat to cryptocurrency users. This software, previously known as “Meeten”, has been renamed “Meetio” and is used by cybercriminals to steal personal data and digital assets.
How does “Meetio” work?
“Meetio” is a piece of malware that pretends to be a legitimate online conferencing app. Scammers create fake websites, blogs, and social media accounts to trick victims into downloading the app. Once installed, the program takes control of the user’s data.
The program is capable of stealing cryptocurrency wallet logins, banking information, and autofill data from browsers like Google Chrome and Microsoft Edge. Additionally, the malware scans and captures data related to cryptocurrency wallets like Ledger, Trezor, Phantom, and Binance, making it extremely dangerous for investors and people who actively use cryptocurrencies.
Use of artificial intelligence in attacks
Malware uses artificial intelligence to create fake but highly convincing websites and accounts that pretend to be official companies and organizations. Modern social engineering techniques, such as social media communication, pose a significant security challenge for users. Attackers often impersonate friends or colleagues of victims to make it even easier to convince them to download malware.
Reports and cases of victims
Tara Gould, director of cyberthreat at Cado Security Labs, said that since the attacks began, the company has received numerous reports of people who connected with fake employers or business partners, downloaded malware, and lost their digital assets shortly thereafter. In one case, a user was contacted by a supposed friend on Telegram who offered to invest, and after downloading the app, the cryptocurrency was stolen.
How to protect yourself from “Meetio” and other threats?

- Update software – Regularly updating your antivirus software and operating system allows for early detection of new threats.
