Romania Brings Tech Innovation to Electoral Stage, becoming one of the first countries to use blockchain to count and validate votes in presidential elections. The Permanent Electoral Authority (ROAP) has joined forces with the European blockchain infrastructure to guarantee transparency, data integrity and resilience of the electoral system.
Blockchain technology, previously associated mainly with cryptocurrencies, is showing its new possibilities here: transparent, decentralized data storage that reduces the risk of manipulation and increases trust in election results.
How does the system work?
Romania's electoral system is based on infrastructure European Blockchain Services Infrastructure (EBSI), which consists of nodes located in 27 European countries. Electoral data is recorded in the form of digital fingerprints (hashes) in this blockchain network, which ensures their immutability and verifiability.
- Each vote is encrypted and stored in a block: As of the date of publication, there are over 83 blocks containing verified votes recorded on the blockchain.
- Transparency of the process: Public access to recorded data is possible via the dashboard on the official ROAP website, allowing observers to track the process in real time.
Oviu Damian, a Romanian blockchain developer, emphasizes:
“Romania uses blockchain to ensure election integrity. A small technological step, but a giant leap for democracy.”
Blockchain in Romania – next milestones
Blockchain is not new to Romania. The country has been consistently developing its technological background:
- NFT Platform (2023): Romanian government institution ICI Decentralized Services has created an NFT trading platform using the MultiversX (EGLD) blockchain.
- First NFT News (2024): The Agerpres news agency has published official news in the form of an NFT, storing it on the MultiversX blockchain.
Experts like Andu Tabacu emphasize the importance of blockchain for data transparency and ownership:
“Blockchain is the technology of truth. Regardless of cryptocurrency’s past, we must recognize its potential to provide trustworthy processes.”
MultiversX: Blockchain of Romanian Origin
MultiverseX (EGLD), blockchain developed by Romanian creators, has become a symbol of the country's technological advancement. Solutions such as sharding, which enable scalability and speed, have been described by experts as the “technological Holy Grail of cryptocurrencies.”
- Collaboration with giants: MultiversX partners with Alibaba Cloud to enter Asian market and support local startups.
- Community and support: “Amazing team, supportive community – EGLD is building an ecosystem on solid foundations,” says analyst Lucky (@LLuciano_BTC).
A Critical Look at Blockchain in Elections
Advantages:
- Transparency and trust: Blockchain eliminates the risk of results being manipulated.
- Resistance to attacks: The distributed nature of EBSI increases security.
Disadvantages:
- Implementation costs: Building infrastructure requires significant financial outlays.
- Dependence on technology: Technical issues may affect the electoral process.
My thoughts
Using blockchain for presidential elections is a step towards democratic innovation. However, the technology itself is not a perfect solution – it requires further testing and adjustments.
